JAKE'S JOURNAL

Chapter One: My New Life

I don't remember much about being a puppy other than that it was crowded, noisy, and I was always hungry. Somehow I became separated from my mom, sisters, and brothers, and ended up in a shelter in Iowa. From there I was sent to a farm in Richland Center, Wisconsin, where I joined lots of other dogs, cats, chickens, horses, cows, and one very loving woman. For seven months I ran around with my pack of friends, having a great time, and sleeping in the barn. Every day our lady would leave the farm to go to work, and in the evening, she'd come home and feed and care for all of us. She took us to the vet, and we were all spayed or neutered and given all our shots.

Sometimes a friend would meet some people who came to the farm and then leave with them. Other times, new friends came to the farm - one of them was a kid who looked just like me, only he was yellow (I'm black.) He'd been living in a turkey blind, and some really nice guy found him, fed him, and brought him to our farm. Life was fun and I never thought it would change.

Today, my life changed completely. It's Friday, a day our lady usually works late, but today she came home early. While she's getting food for the horses, an older couple drive up the driveway and get out of the car. My friends and I immediately run up to them, inviting them to play. They don't seem to care that we're mobbing them, and laugh when we fight for their attention. Our lady comes out and pulls me and the yellow kid out of the pack.

They don't seem to care that we're mobbing them, and laugh when we fight for their attention. Our lady comes out and pulls me and the yellow kid out of the pack.   The man seems to be interested in the yellow kid, but the woman insists that I'm the one she wants. Papers are signed, money is paid, and my vet records go into the woman's purse. Our lady finds a collar for me and I am loaded into the car. (I have always loved riding in a car!)

After about an hour of driving, we pull into another farm. To my surprise, I  am  going to be allowed inside - a motor home!  After some heated discussion, my name is changed from J.J. to Jake. Doesn't matter to me - as long as they didn't call me late to dinner!

Last order of business is to meet my new cousin, Jack. Jake and Jack - how's that for confusing? Anyway, this turkey is a huge manic golden retriever - about a year older than me. He's all over me - I'm sure he's just trying to be friendly, but I'm not having any of it. I snap at his nose and he backs off smartly. Just to make sure, I snap again. Mom and Dad (I knew that's who they are by now) decide to try again tomorrow - good idea.
